A new massive open online course (MOOC) entitled ‘Self-directed learning for higher education’ is being offered by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in collaboration with the Research Unit Self-Directed Learning from North-West University, South Africa.
This MOOC, which will run from 1 to 26 May 2023, is highly relevant as self-directed learning (SDL), where students take responsibility for their own learning, is an essential requirement for students within the 21st-century context. It is specifically focused on faculty and facilitators from higher education institutions. A Certificate of Completion or Participation will be granted depending on the level of participation.
Dr Jako Olivier, COL Adviser: Higher Education, said, “The MOOC will not only empower participants to be able to understand SDL and the theoretical foundation that underpins SDL, but also to effectively use assessment tasks to support SDL, create appropriate learning environments and utilise strategies such as cooperative learning, problem-based learning, as well as play-based learning to foster SDL.”
