In collaboration with Athabasca University (AU), Canada’s Open University, the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is offering the next edition of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Blended Learning Practice (BLP) that is focused on building the competencies of teachers to design and deliver blended courses.
This free, five-week MOOC on BLP (BLPMOOC9) commences 10 March 2024 and runs through to 13 April 2024. The course has been designed to assist teachers in adopting blended learning strategies through a step-by-step constructivist and design-based approach. Teachers in diverse contexts – from primary and secondary to post-secondary education, as well as vocational education and workplace training – will benefit from this course. This course will be led by Professor M. Cleveland-Innes, Mr Dan Wilton and Dr Nathaniel Ostashewski from AU.
Built on COL’s Guide to Blended Learning, this MOOC provides opportunities for the participants to engage in reflective practice and develop an authentic learning environment in their own context. The discussions and associated activities in the course include a review of pedagogy, materials and the use of technology. A course participant in the BLPMOOC8, held in January 2023, commented, “The course is absolutely amazing, I learnt a lot, thank you to the course design team and facilitators who were really amazing in the discussion forums.”
BLPMOOC9 requires a time commitment of approximately three to five hours each week. Learners can earn either a ‘Certificate of Completion’ or ‘Certificate of Participation’ at the end of the course.
COL’s Education Specialist: Technology-Enabled Learning, Dr Sanjaya Mishra said, “The BLP MOOCs have been accessed so far by over 12,600 individuals with a certification rate of nearly 25 per cent. This MOOC has been supporting COL’s TEL initiative to assist in strengthening local capacities at partner institutions throughout the Commonwealth. It is going beyond this and supporting many who want to improve their skills for integrating technology in teaching and learning.”
