A workshop organised with COL’s support on 11-16 February 2021 in Morogoro brought together members of the national task forces reviewing cooperative development policy and law in Tanzania. The event marked a new stage in a project aiming to integrate table banking and lifelong learning for farmers (L3F) into Tanzania’s legislation.

Workshop participants included COL’s local partner, the Matumaini Mapya community group, as well as representatives of local table banking groups, savings and credit cooperatives and agricultural marketing cooperative societies. Officials from Tanzania Agricultural Producer Finance Company, the Ministry of Agriculture, Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission and the Moshi Cooperative University were also in attendance.

During the workshop, findings of two studies were shared – on the impact of L3F on the welfare of farmers and on the role of table banking and L3F in strengthening savings and credit cooperatives. Participants discussed a strategy to implement key recommendations.

COL Education Specialist: Agriculture and Livelihoods, Dr Moses Tenywa, said: “COL’s strategy for scaling L3F from meso to macro level includes creating environments to ensure that national legislations contain key elements contributing to creating sustainable livelihoods.”
