COL in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Kenya organised a three-day stakeholder forum on inclusive education in Kenyan secondary schools from August 8 – 10, 2018 at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Kasarani Campus in Nairobi.

Mr Wambua T. Mutiso, Director of KISE said that the forum was an eye opener for the secondary school heads and teachers – many of whom had not received any training on inclusive teaching practices, and yet were constantly faced with the challenge of handling students with special needs and disabilities. “We look forward to the partnership with COL to ensure successful inclusive education in the secondary school sector in our country,” he added.

Dr Betty Ogange, COL’s Adviser: Teacher Education, said that “COL’s aim is to work with various stakeholders in Kenya to build the capacity of teachers in inclusive pedagogy through a technology-enabled professional development programme”.

Participants in the forum contributed to the development of a strategy towards a programme on Inclusive Education. They represented many organisations including the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), KISE as well as selected special, integrated and mainstream secondary schools.
