In late January 2023, the Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ), in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), engaged a wide range  stakeholders at the national level in a comprehensive five-day workshop. The objective was to map out a framework to introduce technology-enabled learning (TEL) as part of their continuous professional development plan for teachers. The culmination is to ensure that all teachers, and, more specifically teachers that have not been trained in or exposed to information technology, begin to understand and embrace technology that can be integrated into their classroom practice.

In his opening remarks to the workshop participants, the Permanent Secretary,  Ministry of Education, Mr Joel Kamoko, emphasised that to date, 213,359 teachers from both the private sector and public schools (employed and unemployed) have registered with TCZ. He stated, “The focus on a TEL competency framework for teachers is timely. It will undoubtedly assist in overcoming the challenges of wide distances and geographical barriers to learning in Zambia.”

He pledged his support for COL’s TEL initiative and looked forward to its successful implementation.

COL Adviser: Teacher Education, Dr Evode Mukama said, “The final framework plan was endorsed following robust engagement and inputs from government officials, stakeholders and participants and is now ready for large-scale implementation to support teachers in technology-enabled learning for the classroom.”
