COL has supported Nauru to launch an app to improve nutrition and diversify food production in the country. It is a result of collaboration with Nauru’s Department of Commerce, Industry and Environment (CIE) and Department of Education, and the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM).

The app was launched at a virtual ceremony, with participation from the Honourable Rennier Stanislaus Gadabu, CIE Minister, Mrs Berilyn Jeremiah, CIE Permanent Secretary, and COL President and CEO Professor Asha Kanwar.

Minister Gadabu spoke about the way in which the new app can help Nauruans achieve food and nutrition security. “In an era when technology plays an integral role in our everyday lives, this application presents an ideal way to share our knowledge,” he said.

Professor Kanwar called the app development “a productive journey of genuine partnership,” underscoring the contribution of all stakeholders to its success.

COL has led the app development through a participatory design process to gather information on the needs and user requirements and has worked with TTM to develop technical content. As well, Nauruan government officials and TTM staff have been trained in monitoring and evaluation, as well as aspects of using and maintaining the new app.

The Kião Oangam kitchen garden app offers nutritional information and recipes, as well as various useful tips for planting, fertilising, and managing pests. It will be regularly updated with new content.
