Within a changing educational environment, there are many challenges but also opportunities for teacher education. Advances in technology, the experiences encountered in education during the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing need for qualified teachers, among other aspects, have impacted teacher education. Consequently, it is evident that open, flexible and distance learning (OFDL) has an important role in providing access to and opportunities for quality teacher education.
In this online panel discussion, moderated by Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Chair Professor Shironica P. Karunanayaka, Senior Professor in Educational Technology at the Open University of Sri Lanka, the following issues will be covered:
- Teacher education then and now
- Continuing professional development of teachers
- The multi-dimensional nature of teacher education via OFDL (balance between subject matter knowledge, pedagogy and technology)
- The role of design in developing teacher education programs (getting the mixture right between subject matter knowledge, pedagogy, and technology).
