COL’s Technology-Enabled Learning initiative provides guidance and support on systematic ways to build policy, technologies and capacities of educational institutions in the Commonwealth. Training on blended learning is one of these strategies. Developed in collaboration with Athabasca University (AU), Canada’s Open University, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Blended Learning Practice (BLP) builds the competencies of teachers to design and deliver blended courses.
The next edition of MOOC on BLP (BLPMOOC8) commences 15 January 2023. The course has been designed to assist teachers in adopting blended learning strategies through a step-by-step constructivist and design-based approach. Teachers in diverse contexts – from primary and secondary to post-secondary education, as well as vocational education and workplace training – will benefit from this course. This course will be led by Professor M. Cleveland-Innes and Mr Dan Wilton from AU.
Built on COL’s Guide to Blended Learning, this MOOC provides opportunities for the participants to engage in reflective practice and develop an authentic learning environment in their own context. The discussions and associated activities in the course include review of pedagogy, materials and the use of technology. A course participant in the BLPMOOC7, held in January 2022, commented, “As a teacher I could reflect well and learned a lot on ways to use the blended learning models by participating in the BLP MOOC.”
BLPMOOC8 requires a time commitment of approximately five hours each week. Learners can earn either a ‘Certificate of Completion’ or ‘Certificate of Participation’ at the end of the course.
COL’s Director: Education, Dr Sanjaya Mishra said, “at a time when blended learning is the way forward, this MOOC supports building the required skills and competencies of teachers to be a reflective practitioner and develop suitable blended learning designs for their students around the Commonwealth.”
